Today marks 28 years since the killing of Ilir Konushevci, one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army in the Llap region and one of the key founders and supporters of the organization’s logistics sector.

Ilir Konushevci was born on June 20, 1969, in the village of Llugë, in the municipality of Podujevë. He spent his childhood in his birthplace, completed primary school in Lluzhan, secondary school in Podujevë, and later enrolled in Higher School in Ferizaj, which he was unable to complete due to his political and national activities.

On May 13, 1992, together with Rexhep Uka, Selim Haziri, Naim Hyseni, Lulëzim Podvorica, Naim Haziri, Bejtush Llugaliu, and Shaip Haziri, Ilir founded the illegal apolitical group “Shqiponjat” (“The Eagles”). The group was organized to confront anyone threatening the lives and property of Albanians in Kosovo, while also preparing for armed resistance.

Their oath declared:
“I swear before the flag and before my comrades that I will faithfully carry out the duties assigned by the group, and if necessary, I will give my life to achieve our ideal.”

In 1993, the group established contact with the National Movement for the Liberation of Kosovo. Although there were differences regarding organizational methods, both sides agreed that Kosovo’s liberation could only be achieved through armed struggle.

The “Shqiponjat” unit assisted in distributing the LKÇK publication “Çlirimi,” and this cooperation continued until late 1993 and early 1994.

In June 1996, through Rrustem Mustafa, the group established contact with commander Zahir Pajaziti, after which they closely cooperated with him.

Following the killing of Zahir Pajaziti, Hakif Zejnullahu, and Edmond Hoxha on January 31, 1997, near Vushtrri, Ilir and several comrades went underground in Prishtinë before deciding to move to Albania.

In Albania, Ilir shifted his activities toward organizing weapons supplies for the UÇK, while remaining committed to the liberation of Kosovo. He worked closely with comrades of Zahir Pajaziti, including Adrian Krasniqi, Qerim Kelmendi, Mujë Krasniqi, Ismet Abdullahu, and Murat Ajeti.

Together with Ardian Krasniqi, especially after the killing of Luan Haradinaj, Ilir played a major role in securing and transporting weapons into Kosovo. After establishing a network of collaborators, Ilir and Ardian repeatedly entered Kosovo to reorganize UÇK structures and coordinate activities following the death of Zahir Pajaziti.

After Pajaziti’s death, Ilir represented the Llap Operational Zone in the UÇK General Staff.

On October 16, 1997, Ardian Krasniqi was killed during an attack on the Serbian police station in Kliqinë near Pejë. His death deeply affected Ilir and the UÇK leadership, as the two had been inseparable comrades in many operations.

Afterward, Ilir assumed the leading role in transporting weapons into Kosovo. During this period, he reportedly entered Kosovo more than thirty times, delivering various types of weaponry ranging from small arms to anti-tank equipment. He also contributed significantly to bringing professional military officers into the ranks of the UÇK.

At a critical moment, when Kosovo was facing intense offensives and preparations for broader armed conflict, Ilir was killed on the early morning of May 9, 1998, together with doctor Hazir Mala, in an ambush believed to have been organized by Serbian forces while they were traveling toward Bajram Curri with a truck loaded with weapons.

The killing of Ilir Konushevci was considered a major loss for Kosovo, especially for the UÇK and its General Staff.

Ilir Konushevci remains remembered as one of the founders of the UÇK in Llap and one of the most important figures in establishing and supporting the organization’s logistics network, leaving a lasting mark on Kosovo’s modern history.
