A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Panama on Friday, triggering strong shaking that was felt as far away as the capital, while authorities issued a tsunami threat warning.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake caused buildings to shake and prompted evacuations in affected areas.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located near Panama’s southern coast, approximately 14 kilometres southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba.

Tremors were also felt in Panama City, where buildings shook and residents rushed into the streets amid fears of possible consequences. Many gathered outside buildings while waiting for further information about the earthquake’s impact.
