Russia has advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Kosovo, citing “high security risks” and the absence of official diplomatic contacts with Kosovar institutions.

The statement was made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova during a press conference. According to Zakharova, the lack of formal relations between Moscow and Kosovo makes it difficult for Russia to protect the rights and interests of its citizens within the territory.

The warning follows the arrest on February 10 in Arllat, Drenas, where the Kosovo Police detained one Russian citizen and two Belarusian nationals on suspicion of unauthorized border crossing.

Zakharova reiterated that Russia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, which she said explains the absence of official communication channels with Kosovar authorities. Because of this, she noted, providing consular assistance or protection for Russian citizens in Kosovo can be challenging.

She also pointed out that in 2022 the Government of Kosovo tightened visa regulations for Russian nationals, a move that further complicated travel between the two sides.

The advisory is part of Russia’s broader position regarding Kosovo and reflects ongoing political tensions and the lack of diplomatic relations between the two.
