The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has expressed serious concern over the United States decision to temporarily ease sanctions on Russia regarding its oil exports.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Costa said the unilateral decision by the United States to lift sanctions on Russian oil exports is deeply worrying, warning that such a move could affect European security.
“The unilateral decision by the U.S. to remove sanctions on Russian oil exports is very concerning, as it impacts European security. Increasing economic pressure on Russia is essential for it to accept serious negotiations for a just and lasting peace. Weakening sanctions increases Russia’s resources to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Costa wrote.
The United States has authorized countries to purchase Russian oil and petroleum products currently loaded on ships at sea, even though these goods remain under sanctions. The measure is intended to reduce the economic impact on global energy markets caused by the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
According to Scott Bessent, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, the authorization is a temporary measure aimed at promoting stability in global energy markets during the crisis.
The authorization will remain in effect until April 11, after which the situation will be reassessed.
