In a stern evening address on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is prepared to “respond in kind” after Russian forces systematically violated a Kyiv-proposed ceasefire. The President indicated that Ukraine’s actions regarding Russia’s upcoming Victory Day celebrations will depend entirely on the intensity of Russian strikes over the next 24 hours.

A Failed “Test” of Peace

Earlier this week, both nations floated separate, uncoordinated ceasefire proposals. Russia suggested a truce for May 8 and 9 to honor Victory Day, while Ukraine proposed a ceasefire starting at midnight on May 6 to act as a litmus test for the Kremlin’s sincerity.

The results, according to Zelenskyy, were definitive:

  • 1,820 Violations: Within the first 10 hours of the Ukrainian-proposed truce, Russian forces launched nearly 2,000 attacks across the country.
  • Civilian Targets: The most notable tragedy occurred in the Sumy region, where a Russian strike hit a kindergarten, killing two adults.
  • Diplomatic Rejection: Zelenskyy noted that while the Kremlin has been given a “clear proposal” for diplomacy, Moscow has chosen “active hostilities and terrorist bombings” instead.

The “Victory Day” Ultimatum

As Russia prepares for its annual military parade on Red Square this Saturday, the security situation has become increasingly precarious. Zelenskyy’s warning suggests that if Russia continues its campaign of drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian cities, Kyiv may target Russian military celebrations.

“If that one person in Moscow, who cannot live without war, is interested in nothing but a parade, that is a different matter,” Zelenskyy remarked, referring to Vladimir Putin. “We will determine our entirely justified responses.”

Russia on High Alert

The Kremlin has already signaled deep anxiety regarding the safety of its national holiday:

  • Scaled-Back Parades: For the first time, Moscow has ordered a version of the Red Square parade with no military hardware, fearing that tanks and missile launchers would be prime targets for Ukrainian long-range drones.
  • Cancellations in Crimea: Russian-installed authorities in occupied Crimea have canceled all Victory Day events due to “safety concerns.”
  • Deep Strikes: Concerns are bolstered by Ukraine’s recent success in striking a military-industrial complex in Cheboksary, over 1,000 kilometers inside Russian territory, proving that Moscow is within reach of Kyiv’s newest drone technology.

With the ceasefire effectively dead, the international community is bracing for a “symmetrical” escalation as May 9 approaches.
