Today marks the 28th anniversary of the Battle of the Llapushnik Gorge, one of the fiercest and most significant confrontations during the war in Kosovo, fought between the Kosovo Liberation Army and Serbian forces in the Drenas region.
The battle lasted for three consecutive days, from May 7 to May 9, 1998, in Llapushnik, and is considered one of the key moments of the KLA’s resistance during the Kosovo war.
The Llapushnik Gorge held major strategic importance, as controlling the area made it difficult for Serbian forces to move along the Prishtina–Peja route, giving the KLA a significant advantage in mobility and military organization on the ground.
For an extended period, the area remained under KLA control, enabling the movement and supply of weapons while also influencing military developments in other parts of the country.
The Battle of Llapushnik remains one of the most important events in the historical memory of the Kosovo war and the armed resistance of that period.
