European Union Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos used her visit to Kosovo to call on the political spectrum to overcome the institutional deadlock and establish stable institutions so the country can advance toward the European Union.

“My clear call during this visit is for all political actors to find a way to restore institutional stability,” Kos said during a joint press conference with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

Kos visited Kosovo for the first time since taking office in 2024. She had planned several visits previously, but due to political developments in the country, the trips had been postponed.

However, Kos arrived once again at a time when Kosovo still does not have a functioning Assembly, while both the Government and the Presidency remain in caretaker roles. Extraordinary elections are expected to take place in June.

Kos stated that many reforms have stalled because of repeated elections and emphasized that Kosovo must catch up after what she described as a “lost year” in 2025.

“It is important that once the new Assembly is constituted, Kosovo’s political leaders come together and establish all institutions, including electing a new president through compromise, and put an end to this prolonged institutional deadlock,” she said.

During the conference, Kos also stressed that “there is no security in Europe without Kosovo,” adding that the country has a European perspective, but must demonstrate success in implementing reforms and in the dialogue with Serbia.
