Romania’s President, Nicușor Dan, has called an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense following the crash of a Russian drone into a residential building. The Russian ambassador in Bucharest has also been summoned for explanations.

The Romanian president stated that the incident requires a coordinated response at the national, international, and NATO levels. He stressed that full responsibility for the incident lies with the Russian Federation.

According to him, the event is a direct consequence of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the careless use of military systems near NATO borders.

Romania has informed all NATO allies and European Union partners about the incident. Bucharest has also requested the deployment of additional anti-drone capabilities on its territory to strengthen defenses on the alliance’s eastern flank.

Romanian authorities are expected to also brief the UN Security Council, describing the incident as a repeated violation of international law by Russia.

Meanwhile, France has also summoned the Russian ambassador for explanations following the incident.

The Russian drone struck an apartment building in the eastern city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine and Moldova. The explosion caused a fire on the tenth floor of the building.

Two people received medical assistance for minor injuries, while around 70 residents were evacuated during the firefighting operation.

This marks the first time Romanian civilians have been injured in an incident linked to Russian drones during the war in Ukraine. So far, Moscow has not officially responded to the event.
