On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani paid tribute to survivors of wartime sexual violence, stating that the crimes committed by what she described as “genocidal Serbia” were intended to destroy human dignity and leave lasting scars on thousands of victims.

Osmani said that Kosovo honors the courage and resilience of survivors who endured severe trauma during the war but found the strength to continue their lives with dignity while pursuing justice.

“Sexual violence committed during the war by genocidal Serbia was aimed at attacking human dignity and was among the most horrific crimes inflicted upon thousands of women and men,” Osmani stated.

She emphasized that remembrance, justice, and continued support for survivors remain permanent obligations for Kosovo’s institutions and society.

Reflecting on her five years in office, Osmani said her presidency worked to ensure that the voices of survivors were heard internationally and that Serbia was confronted with the crimes committed during the Kosovo war wherever possible.

“We have made sure that the voices of survivors were heard and empowered around the world, and we have not missed any opportunity to confront Serbia with the crimes it committed. The truth will never be forgotten, and the pursuit of justice will never stop,” she said.

The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed globally to honor survivors, raise awareness of wartime sexual violence, and strengthen efforts to ensure accountability for such crimes.
