European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has provided further details on the EU’s latest sanctions package against Russia, describing it as “the largest package in four years” that will “hit Putin where it hurts most.”
In a statement, Kallas said:
“We have reached an agreement on the 21st package of sanctions against Russia.
It includes comprehensive measures targeting Moscow’s financial system, its military-industrial complex, and the energy sector—the pillars sustaining Russia’s wartime economy.
We are hitting Putin where it hurts most by cutting off the financial resources he relies on to continue his war.
This is not the end of the road for sanctions. We are already working on the next steps. The European Union must remain prepared to respond to any further escalation by Russia.
This is our largest sanctions package in four years, covering a total of 218 entities and individuals.
We have imposed measures against more than 100 banks and cryptocurrency operators, over 40 vessels belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, as well as several oil refineries in Russia and Belarus that support Moscow’s war effort.
We are also responding to Russia’s continued attacks on civilians, critical infrastructure, and cultural heritage by sanctioning more than 50 entities from Russia’s military-industrial complex, including key actors involved in the production of long-range Russian drones.
These measures follow last week’s sanctions against those responsible for the abuse and killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war and detained civilians, as well as technology companies enabling the Kremlin’s repression of internet users.”
