Construction of a third bridge over the Ibër River in Mitrovica is progressing, with Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti saying the project is designed to improve security, protect surrounding infrastructure and strengthen connectivity between the two sides of the city.
During a visit to the construction site, Kurti said the bridge will be 65 metres long and 22.5 metres wide, accommodating four traffic lanes, each 3.5 metres wide, as well as sidewalks on both sides.
The project also includes the construction of two roundabouts and a 500-metre road segment with four lanes and sidewalks measuring 2.2 metres in width.
As part of the project, authorities are also carrying out rehabilitation of the Ibër riverbed along a 525-metre section, with a planned width of 47 metres.
Kurti said environmental protection, increased safety and the protection of surrounding infrastructure are among the project’s main objectives.
“Particular importance has been given to adequate and modern lighting,” Kurti said, noting that lighting poles will be installed along the bridge, sidewalks and areas surrounding the river.
He added that construction is currently progressing according to schedule and that, if the current pace continues, the project could be completed and inaugurated by the end of 2026.
Caretaker Infrastructure Minister Dimal Basha said the new bridge would also improve access for security and law enforcement agencies between the two sides of the Ibër.
“This is the third bridge being built under the Kurti government, demonstrating that we are ready to provide security and law enforcement institutions with faster and easier access to both sides of the Ibër,” Basha said.
He added that the bridge is also expected to improve services for residents and businesses and contribute to the development and economic value of the surrounding area.
The project represents another major infrastructure intervention in Mitrovica, where bridges across the Ibër remain important both for transportation and for the city’s broader urban development.
