Norway’s King Harald V has been hospitalized after undergoing a medical examination, with the Royal Palace announcing that the 89-year-old monarch will take two weeks of sick leave.

Harald, Europe’s longest-serving reigning monarch, has been receiving treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder in which red blood cells are destroyed prematurely. The condition can cause fatigue, paleness and breathing difficulties.

According to the Royal Palace, the king has undergone cortisone treatment in recent weeks. The medication has caused fluid retention, prompting doctors to admit him to hospital for further treatment and monitoring.

During Harald’s medical leave, his official duties will be carried out by his son, Crown Prince Haakon, who will serve as regent.

King Harald, who ascended to the throne in 1991, has experienced several health problems in recent years. He has undergone treatment for a number of conditions, including heart-related issues, and has had a pacemaker implanted. His health has also led to a reduction in some of his official engagements.

Despite his recurring health problems, Harald has previously ruled out abdication. The king has said that he made a commitment to remain on the throne for life when he took his oath before Norway’s parliament.

The Royal Palace has not indicated that the latest hospitalization will have any long-term impact on the king’s constitutional role.
