Acting Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti said after his meeting with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku that the two sides had discussed the criteria and profile of Kosovo’s next president, expressing a willingness to reach an agreement.
Kurti said the goal is to respect the will of Kosovo’s citizens and elect a new president without the need for another election, while ensuring the democratic functioning of state institutions.
“We discussed the criteria for the profile of the new president or president from several perspectives, particularly regarding values, merits and contributions to society, including professional achievements,” Kurti said, describing the decision as highly important and the process as sensitive.
He said both parties would now return to their respective political organizations for internal consultations before meeting again.
“Following this meeting, we need to return to our respective political subjects for internal consultations and then meet again so that we can reach an agreement,” Kurti said.
According to Kurti, the mutual trust established during the meeting, combined with a clear willingness to reach an agreement, provides reason for optimism.
He stressed that Kosovo is currently functioning with an acting president, an acting government and sworn-in members of parliament, but that the country’s institutions cannot function sustainably without an agreement on a new president.
Kurti emphasized that the process should not be driven by narrow political interests or individual ambitions, but by state responsibility, democratic interests and the need to establish the head of state as a symbol of the unity of the people.
