The Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) has elected judge Afërdita Bytyqi as its new deputy chair, while the Council is also expected to consider the status of resignations submitted by Serbian judges in 2022.
Bytyqi secured six votes from KJC members, defeating fellow candidate Artan Abazi, who received five votes.
KJC Chair Rrustem Thaçi said Bytyqi’s mandate will last three years and began on 27 August 2026.
The Council is also expected to examine a request from the acting president concerning the resignations of Serbian judges submitted at the end of 2022, as well as a subsequent notification from the judges announcing that they wish to withdraw those resignations.
The issue comes amid the broader institutional tensions surrounding the participation of Kosovo Serbs in the country’s judicial and political structures.
The KJC’s decision could therefore have implications for the future status of the Serbian judges who initially stepped down and later sought to reverse their decision.
