British MP Alicia Kearns has condemned reports that Ratko Mladić, the former commander of Bosnian Serb forces convicted of genocide and war crimes, will be buried in Serbia with full state honors.
In a post on X, Kearns criticized Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the Serbian government over their position on the Srebrenica genocide.
“Vučić and the Serbian government deny the genocide in Srebrenica. Now they will bury the man who gave the orders, Ratko Mladić, with full honors. That is a narrative,” Kearns wrote.
She stressed that Mladić’s death does not mean the ideas associated with him have disappeared.
“Mladić is dead, but millions of Bosniaks continue to live. Every life lived is a victory against him and his genocidal ambitions,” the British MP said.
Kearns also warned that denial of the Srebrenica genocide helps keep those ideas alive.
“Do not think those ambitions died with him. They are kept alive by those who deny the genocide,” she added.
Mladić died on August 27 in The Hague, where he had been serving a life sentence.
He was convicted by international justice authorities of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including responsibility for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed.
