Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has commemorated activist Xhavit Haziri on the 28th anniversary of his disappearance.
Kurti paid tribute at Haziri’s statue in Obiliq, recalling the circumstances surrounding his disappearance on September 17, 1998, as well as his political and patriotic activities.
According to Kurti, Haziri was abducted by individuals he identified as members of the Serbian secret service while he was passing near the Llapi Mosque in Prishtina. He said witnesses had reported seeing Haziri being forced into a white “Golf” vehicle, which then headed toward the Prishtina Madrasa.
“Twenty-eight years ago, prominent activist Xhavit Haziri was abducted by Serbian security authorities and forcibly disappeared, remaining missing ever since,” Kurti wrote.
Haziri, originally from Druari in Vushtrri, was educated in Obiliq and completed his law studies at the University of Prishtina. According to Kurti, he became politically active following the 1981 demonstrations and served a prison sentence from 1986 to 1990.
Following his release, Haziri continued his involvement with the Popular Movement of Kosovo and later with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).
Kurti said that Haziri’s family reported his disappearance on September 21, 1998, and that he remains missing to this day.
Concluding his tribute, the prime minister described Haziri as a “hero of Kosovo and martyr of freedom,” expressing his respect for his legacy and memory.
