On the third anniversary of the Banjska attack, the European Union has reiterated that the incident represented a serious security threat to the region and called on Serbia to act immediately to bring those responsible to justice.
In a response to Koha, an EU spokesperson said that Serbia has still not taken the necessary steps to bring to justice those responsible who are located on its territory. The spokesperson also said the issue was raised during a meeting between EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in New York.
“Three years ago, the Banjska attack on September 24, 2023, carried out by armed Kosovo Serb attackers against the Kosovo Police, seriously threatened security in the region. This horrific attack took the life of one police officer and left two others injured. The EU has continuously called for those responsible to be held accountable and regrets that, to date, Serbia has still not taken the necessary steps to prosecute those who are in Serbia and face the relevant indictments,” the EU spokesperson said.
“We expect Serbia to fully cooperate through the established channels of mutual legal assistance. The matter has been pending for a long time and must be pursued by Serbia immediately. The High Representative also raised this issue with President Vučić during their meeting in New York,” the spokesperson added.
