The Basic Prosecution Office in Prishtina has authorized the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (KPI) to investigate police actions taken during Monday’s protests in the areas surrounding the buildings of the Kosovo Government and Assembly.
According to a statement issued by the prosecution, KPI investigators will take the necessary steps to examine individual cases related to developments during the demonstrations.
“The purpose of the authorization is to collect relevant information and evidence regarding any potential exceeding of police powers during the use of force in dispersing protesters,” the prosecution said.
The Basic Prosecution Office in Prishtina said it would coordinate its actions with the KPI and take all necessary legal measures to clarify any cases in which force may have been used beyond what was necessary or permitted under applicable legislation.
“The Basic Prosecution Office in Prishtina remains committed to undertaking all investigative actions aimed at fully clarifying the circumstances that arose during the protests,” the statement said.
The investigation will focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding the police response and determining whether force was used beyond the limits of necessity and the powers granted to police officers by law.
