Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) leader Bedri Hamza has rejected Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s latest proposal on the election of Kosovo’s president, saying the issue must be resolved through a political agreement.

Speaking at a press conference following Kurti’s appearance, Hamza described the prime minister’s proposal as unserious and argued that the law concerning the Kosovo Specialist Chambers should be approved, but that the president should not be elected without a prior agreement among the political parties.

“How serious is this when, just today, there have been three or four different positions?” Hamza said, referring to Kurti’s statements during the day.

He also criticized what he described as inconsistencies in Kurti’s approach toward the LDK and the presidential candidates being proposed.

“These are names that have not passed for quite some time. There has been no agreement on them,” Hamza said.

According to Hamza, the Specialist Chambers law should proceed, and a president can also be elected, but only following an agreement between the political parties.

“The law should pass. The president could be elected, but not a president without an agreement. Not this kind of ‘this is the president, take it or leave it’ approach,” Hamza said.

He questioned why such a proposal had not been raised during previous meetings between the parties or during discussions earlier on Tuesday.

Hamza’s remarks came after Kurti invited him to commit to attending an Assembly session for the presidential vote, offering to place the second reading of the Specialist Chambers law first on the agenda, followed by the presidential election.
