The European Union has welcomed the election of Justina Shiroka-Pula as the new President of Kosovo, with EU Ambassador to Kosovo Dirk Schuebel expressing hope that her election will contribute to renewed political and institutional stability.
In a statement following the vote, Schuebel congratulated Shiroka-Pula and said he looked forward to working with her, Kosovo’s institutions and political actors to advance the country’s European integration.
“Warm congratulations to the new President of Kosovo, Justina Shiroka Pula. With hope for renewed political and institutional stability, I look forward to working with her, Kosovo’s institutions and the broad political spectrum to bring the country closer to the European Union. The EU’s support will remain unwavering,” Schuebel wrote.
Shiroka-Pula was elected with 81 votes in the 120-seat Kosovo Assembly during a late-night session on Tuesday.
She becomes Kosovo’s sixth president since the country declared independence in 2008.
