At least two people were killed in a ballistic missile strike on Kyiv in the early hours of the morning, as Russia intensified its aerial attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

The two fatalities were reported in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, in the southeastern part of the city, according to information released by the city’s military administration.

The attack followed a warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said Tuesday evening that Kyiv could face a “massive attack” by Russia.

An AFP journalist in Kyiv reported hearing explosions throughout much of the night, while authorities had placed the capital on heightened alert, particularly over the threat of ballistic missile strikes.

Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of systematically targeting critical infrastructure, with recent attacks also hitting energy facilities. Ukrainian energy company DTEK reported power outages following strikes on energy infrastructure.

Two major bridges in Kyiv have also come under attack in recent days. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the situation in the capital last week as “dramatic” amid continued Russian strikes.

Frequent air-raid alerts have also disrupted economic activity in the capital, forcing workers to suspend operations and seek shelter during periods of heightened threat.

Overnight attacks were also reported in Zaporizhzhia. According to regional military administration head Mykhailo Semikin, “transport infrastructure” was hit.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that one of the possible targets may have been a bridge connecting the two banks of the Dnieper River. The bridge was inaugurated several weeks before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Semikin had also reported an attack on a bridge in Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday.
