PDK Chairman Bedri Hamza said that the President of the Republic of Kosovo should exercise her role within her constitutional and legal responsibilities, while political parties must fulfill their respective responsibilities.
Hamza stressed that the President has a unifying role, while governing and opposition parties have different political duties.
“No, I think the President plays her role within her constitutional and legal responsibilities, her unifying role, while political parties have their own responsibilities. Those in government have to do their job; those of us in opposition have to provide alternatives, but also criticize them and, naturally, tell them that this country is not moving in the right direction. So, yes, we also have criticisms,” he said.
Asked whether PDK had spoken with President Justina Shiroka-Pula before she accepted the position, Hamza said there had been no communication with her and that her name had not been officially discussed within the party.
“We did not have much time to talk. They called her—not me—and told her, Ms. Pula, I had her as a professor, that we had the possibility of proposing her to become president. Naturally, after those discussions, she accepted, and we agreed. The name of Professor Justina Pula Shiroka was never officially discussed within the Democratic Party of Kosovo as a candidate for president,” he said.
Hamza also commented on the approval of the law, saying that the Assembly had fulfilled its responsibility and that laws passed by the legislature must be implemented by the relevant institutions.
“Look, the Assembly has done its job. The MPs have done their job. One of the main duties and responsibilities of the Assembly is to approve laws. The Assembly approves laws, while those who are required to implement them must do so. We consider that the Assembly approved the law in full compliance with the proper procedure, and we have said that laws are applicable to everyone. At the same time, the Assembly also has the right to amend the Constitution, to repeal international agreements and to conclude international agreements. The Assembly has its own responsibilities,” he said.
