OSCE Ambassador Gerard McGurk has reacted to the election of Kosovo’s new President, Justina Shiroka-Pula.
McGurk congratulated the political parties for their willingness to compromise and reach an agreement, stressing that the interests of the people and communities they represent should always come first.
“Kosovo has once again elected a woman as President, continuing an important tradition. This example should now be extended to every other area of public life,” he said in a post.

“I welcome last night’s election of President Justina Shiroka-Pula by the Assembly, completing the formation of the institutions.
I congratulate the political parties for their willingness to compromise and reach an agreement. The interests of the people and communities they represent should always come first.
Kosovo has once again elected a woman as President, continuing an important tradition. This example should now be extended to every other area of public life. Women need more space in decision-making, greater financial independence, and stronger protection from gender-based and domestic violence.
President Shiroka-Pula will find a committed partner in @OSCEKosovo as she works to advance these priorities.”
