Croatian Member of the European Parliament Tomislav Sokol (HDZ) has delivered a blunt assessment of Aleksandar Vučić and the current political direction of Serbia, arguing that the Serbian president represents a security concern for neighboring countries and that Serbia has moved further away from its European course.

Speaking live on N1 Studio from Strasbourg, Sokol said relations between Vučić and Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik are not particularly good, arguing that Vučić does not want anyone else to occupy a stronger position when it comes to representing Serbs.

Sokol also referred to Serbia’s upcoming October 25 elections and said that, according to polling he cited, the student movement was in a strong position.

“Vučić is a security threat to all surrounding countries. He is the same as in the 1990s and pursues a Greater Serbia policy,” Sokol said.

He went further, arguing that “Serbia is worse today than it was under Slobodan Milošević,” claiming that Vučić has pushed the country backwards and that genuinely pro-European and pro-Western political forces have disappeared from the political scene.

According to Sokol, voters are now effectively faced with competing versions of the same nationalist political direction, which he described as “Greater Serbian and Chetnik ideology.”

“Whoever wins, it will be the same because both options are the same,” Sokol said.

He called on the European Commission to stop making concessions to Serbia and to reassess its approach toward Belgrade, arguing that previous concessions had failed to produce the expected changes.

“The concession was a debacle because Serbia only got worse,” he said.

Sokol also addressed Croatia’s security policy, arguing that Zagreb should not focus primarily on who wins the Serbian elections but should instead strengthen its own defense capabilities. He praised Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anušić for his work in that area.

Sokol’s remarks reflect a sharply critical assessment of Serbia’s current political direction and its relationship with the European Union, as the country approaches another politically consequential election.
