US Congressman Ritchie Torres has expressed deep concern over what he described as an outbreak of violence against protesters in Albania, calling the actions of the Albanian police unacceptable and demanding that they stop.

In a statement posted on X on October 21, Torres said Albanians have the right to protest peacefully and stressed that police must respect that right and uphold the rule of law.

“I am deeply disturbed by the outbreak of violence against protesters in Albania. The actions taken by the Albanian police are beyond the pale, and must end,” Torres wrote.

He added that the situation must be de-escalated to put an end to what he called alarming violence.

“Albanians have a right to peacefully protest, the police must respect the protesters’ right to protest, and the police must maintain the rule of law,” he stated.

Torres’s remarks add to the international attention surrounding the handling of protests in Albania, with his statement emphasizing the importance of protecting peaceful assembly and ensuring that law enforcement operates within the rule of law.
