Clashes between opposition lawmakers and members of Albania’s parliamentary majority have attracted the attention of international media following Thursday’s tense session in the Albanian Parliament.
During the session, opposition MPs attempted to disrupt parliamentary proceedings by throwing objects and pulling microphones from the desks of members of the ruling majority.
Amid the escalating tensions, opposition lawmakers also held up photographs of students injured by police during protests in Tirana, linking their actions inside Parliament to the demonstrators’ demands.
The incident was covered by several international media outlets, including The Guardian, which published footage of the physical altercations and the tensions that erupted during the parliamentary session.
Other foreign media also reported on the confrontation, showing opposition lawmakers attempting to block the parliamentary podium and throwing objects towards representatives of the governing majority.
The clashes took place against a backdrop of heightened political tensions in Albania, as student-led demonstrations and protests by citizens continued outside Parliament.
The protesters are demanding greater support for education and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, adding to pressure on the government amid the ongoing political confrontation.
