Former world chess champion and Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov has warned that easing sanctions against Russia would allow Moscow to strengthen its military capabilities and kill more Ukrainians.
Kasparov opposed proposals to ease sanctions in exchange for the release of Russian political prisoners, arguing that such a move could have direct consequences for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.
According to Kasparov, economic restrictions on Moscow are not merely a diplomatic tool but also a means of limiting Russia’s ability to finance its war effort and manufacture weapons.
“The fewer sanctions there are, the more components like these will reach Russia,” Kasparov said, referring to parts used in the production of missiles and drones, according to Kyiv Post.
He warned that increased energy revenues and easier access to Western components would give the Kremlin greater opportunities to expand military production.
Kasparov also criticised diplomatic efforts to end the war, while defending Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s participation in negotiations.
He argued that Ukraine cannot afford to jeopardise its relationship with the United States because it relies on American military assistance and intelligence support.
According to Kasparov, Zelensky is compelled by the circumstances to take part in negotiations in order to preserve Washington’s backing.
His remarks come amid discussions about the possibility of renewed negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States, with sanctions remaining one of the principal instruments of international pressure on Moscow.
