Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her pick for vice president for the 2024 presidential election soon.
The person she selects is anticipated to join her at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has used social media to insist on the need to change the date and location of the upcoming presidential debate.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to announce her vice presidential pick, who is expected to join her on the campaign trail on Tuesday. The leading candidates are Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.
Duke University political science professor Jon Green told Voice of America that Harris’s choice for vice president, as one of her first decisions as a presidential candidate, is expected to make a strong impression on American voters regarding her decision-making abilities.
“Her choice will signal her priorities and approach to governance in case she is unable to fulfill the duties of President,” he said in a Skype interview with Voice of America.
Harris plans to visit several key states with her vice presidential candidate, starting with a campaign rally on Tuesday in Pennsylvania. Trump’s campaign leaders are also expected to focus time and energy on states that could determine the outcome of the November general election.
“In this year’s election, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona are considered relatively large and competitive states,” says analyst Josh Green.
As the electorate awaits the Democratic vice presidential pick, interest is also growing regarding the debate between Harris and former President Trump. The Republican presidential candidate argues that now that President Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race, the debate scheduled for September 10 on ABC should be replaced with a debate on Fox News in Pennsylvania in early September, with an audience present.
On Saturday, Trump stated via a post on his Truth Social platform regarding the debate with Harris that “I’ll see her on September 4 or there will be no debate.”
Harris’s campaign has insisted on sticking to the original debate plan.
“Donald, I hope to see you on the debate stage, because as the saying goes, if you have something to say, it’s better to say it to my face,” she said.
It remains to be seen if Harris and Trump will meet face-to-face, but former President Trump will have another opportunity to criticize Harris and her vice presidential pick at a campaign rally in Bozeman, Montana, on August 9.
