From today, drivers who have not exchanged their Serbian driver’s licenses will be fined if caught by road police while driving their vehicles.

On Friday, the process of replacing Serbian driver’s licenses with those issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, featuring Kosovo city symbols, concluded.

Five months after the completion of the vehicle re-registration process from Serbian to Kosovo plates, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo began the process of exchanging driver’s licenses. Drivers were given a deadline of three and a half months to replace their Serbian-issued driver’s licenses with those issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo. Initially, the deadline was from May 9 to August 9, but the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo extended the replacement period until August 23. This deadline expired on Friday, so starting today, drivers, particularly in northern Kosovo where there were the most such documents, will no longer be able to drive their vehicles if they hold Serbian documents.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo has announced over the weekend that drivers who have not completed the exchange will not be able to drive their vehicles, and from today, they will start imposing penalties, as such documents are considered illegal in Kosovo.

The amount of the fine is not yet known, and according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, these fines will be determined by the court. However, the Deputy Director of Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, stated that the fines will range from 500 to 1,500 euros.

The process of exchanging driver’s licenses has proceeded smoothly, with over 6,300 documents exchanged during this period.

The majority of requests for driver’s license exchanges were made in northern Kosovo, with 5,574 requests.

In Leposavic, there were 1,944 requests; in Mitrovica North, 1,536; in Zubin Potok, 940; and in Zvecan, 1,154.
