At least one person has died and dozens have been injured as powerful wildfires continue to spread across coastal areas of Croatia.
Authorities found one person dead in the affected area, while more than 40 people have been hospitalized with burns and respiratory problems. Seven of those injured are reportedly in serious condition.
More than 1,200 people have been evacuated from the two worst-affected areas, Lokva Rogoznica and Omiš.
Among those evacuated was a group of Hungarian tourists. According to Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, four of them were injured, while two required hospitalization.
Hundreds of firefighters, supported by Canadair firefighting aircraft, are continuing efforts to contain the intense wildfires along Croatia’s coastline.
Meanwhile, the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service has warned of further extreme weather conditions. Forecasts indicate that the heatwave affecting parts of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as southern Britain, Ireland, northern France and southern Sweden, is expected to continue until 19 August.
