At least 14 people have died in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and “many others” have been injured following heavy rainfall that caused landslides.

Darko Juka, spokesperson for the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNK), confirmed that the bodies of the 14 victims have been found.

“We have received many reports of missing persons,” he stated during a press conference in Mostar. He added that the most critical situation is in the Donja Jablanica area, located on the route from Mostar to Sarajevo.

“A pregnant woman, whose baby died in utero, has been evacuated from the flooded areas in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Llamija Duranoviq, director of the Dr. Safet Mujiq Cantonal Hospital, to REL.

Her husband has also been injured but is not in life-threatening condition.

“A child around ten years old has also been admitted, who was brought in by an EUFOR helicopter. He is not in danger of life,” Duranoviq noted, adding that patients are continuously arriving and being transported by helicopters or emergency service vehicles.

During an extraordinary meeting on October 4, the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina unanimously decided to deploy the Armed Forces in the Jablanica municipality.

Rescue teams, other units, and an army helicopter are involved in efforts to assist civil authorities in responding to this natural disaster, REL reports.

Earlier, the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina stated that a helicopter from the European Union Force in Bosnia (EUFOR) is transporting severely injured individuals from Jablanica.

The mayor of Jablanica, Damir Shabanoviq, announced that a state of natural disaster would be declared in the municipality and throughout the country.
