Tensions over the “Open Balkans” initiative have flared once again following the participation of North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski in the International Summer, Rakija, and Tourism Fair in Serbia. The event has sparked renewed debate, with opposition party BDI criticizing Mickoski and the Albanian “VLEN” coalition for contradictory stances on the initiative.
BDI MP Arbana Pasholli accused the “VLEN” coalition, which previously opposed the initiative, of flip-flopping, citing past statements from coalition members like Arben Taravari, who argued for North Macedonia’s withdrawal. Meanwhile, Mickoski, calling the event an opportunity for economic collaboration, defended the initiative, emphasizing its potential to strengthen regional ties.
“Open Balkans” includes North Macedonia, Serbia, and Albania, but has faced rejection from Kosovo, Montenegro, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. While Mickoski’s visit marks his first official participation, the “VLEN” coalition continues to call for North Macedonia’s exit, criticizing the initiative as incomplete.
Deputy Prime Minister Izet Mexhiti, also from the “VLEN” coalition, expressed doubts about the initiative’s effectiveness, stressing that a truly successful regional project must include all Western Balkan nations, including Kosovo.
The “Open Balkans” initiative, launched in 2019 by Serbia, Albania, and North Macedonia, aims to promote economic cooperation and free movement but has been a point of political contention across the region.
