French authorities announced the seizure of more than two tons of cocaine valued at an estimated €130 million at the port of Le Havre in northwest France, according to Radio Free Europe.

During the operation, a truck driver and a dock worker were arrested for their involvement in the smuggling operation. If convicted, they face prison sentences of up to 30 years.

The port of Le Havre has long been a significant entry point for cocaine trafficking into France.

Record Drug Seizure

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau praised the police for their success, stating, “We are intensifying our fight against drug trafficking daily, thanks to the exceptional work of our agents,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

This operation marks one of the largest cocaine seizures in French history, reflecting the government’s strengthened efforts to combat drug smuggling and related gang violence.

Broader Efforts Across Europe

France, alongside other European nations, continues to crack down on organized crime groups involved in drug trafficking and the violent turf wars associated with these operations. In 2023, the European Union launched a coordinated initiative with port authorities across the continent to disrupt smuggling networks in major port cities.

The seizure underscores the growing collaboration between European authorities to combat the escalating drug trade and highlights the need for continued vigilance in addressing the complexities of organized crime.
