Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has announced his resignation following unsuccessful talks between his conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democrats (SPÖ) to form a new government.

In a video statement, Nehammer declared his intention to step down as the leader of the ÖVP, according to Radio Free Europe. The announcement came just hours after coalition discussions between ÖVP and SPÖ began, following the withdrawal of the liberal NEOS party from weeks-long negotiations.

Breakdown in Coalition Talks

Nehammer cited internal divisions within the SPÖ as the main reason for the failed negotiations.
“It is evident that destructive forces within the SPÖ have prevailed,” Nehammer said, adding, “We have tried everything up to this point. An agreement on key issues is not possible, making a positive future for Austria unattainable.”

He further emphasized that the ÖVP would not support any program that undermines the country’s economic interests.

Opposition to Far-Right Coalition

Nehammer reaffirmed his stance against forming a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), led by Herbert Kickl.
“My deep belief is that radicals do not offer solutions to any problems,” he stated.

However, the pro-business faction within the ÖVP has shown preference for a coalition with the FPÖ, which won the September parliamentary elections, over a partnership with the SPÖ.

Implications for Austria

Nehammer’s resignation signals further political uncertainty in Austria, as major parties struggle to bridge ideological divides. The ÖVP now faces the challenge of selecting a new leader capable of navigating complex coalition dynamics in the wake of shifting voter preferences.
