Former U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a “friend” and someone he deeply respects. Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump emphasized the mutual respect between the two leaders.
“I believe President Erdogan respects me just as much as I respect him,” Trump said, responding to questions on foreign policy during his address.
Trump highlighted his achievements during his first term, stating that he avoided wars, defeated ISIS in Syria, and significantly reduced the number of U.S. troops in the region. Addressing the role of Turkey in these efforts, Trump acknowledged Ankara’s critical importance in regional stability, particularly concerning Syria.
When asked whether he would withdraw the approximately 2,000 U.S. troops still stationed in Syria, Trump replied, “I won’t disclose that—it’s part of military strategy. But Turkey is undoubtedly a key factor in this matter.”
Trump’s statements underscore his admiration for Erdogan, reinforcing their diplomatic relationship, which he described as built on trust and respect.
