German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed solidarity during a meeting in Berlin, addressing comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump about his interest in acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island, which is a Danish autonomous territory.

While Scholz and Frederiksen did not directly mention Trump or Greenland, Scholz referred to the principle that “borders must not be changed by force,” adding in English, “to whom it may concern,” as reported by Radio Free Europe.

Strong Europe and NATO Partnership

The leaders emphasized the importance of unity during challenging times. Scholz highlighted the strong partnership between Germany and Denmark and their shared perspectives on global issues, particularly the significance of Europe and NATO in maintaining security.

Frederiksen reiterated the European Union’s foundation on cooperation, peace, and progress, urging respect for these principles.

Trump’s Greenland Ambitions

Trump has previously suggested a desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, citing its strategic value for international security. The island, located between North America and Europe, has become increasingly significant as Arctic ice melts, opening new shipping routes and revealing potential reserves of rare minerals and oil.

In a recent statement, Trump reportedly claimed the U.S. would eventually “get Greenland” to enhance its strategic position.

European Unity Amid Global Challenges

Frederiksen pointed out the importance of Nordic unity in defense matters, stressing the gravity of current geopolitical tensions.

Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Scholz affirmed that Europe and the U.S. agree the conflict must end on terms that do not favor Russian aggression. “We agree with our partners in Washington that this war must end, but not through a dictated peace,” said Scholz, indirectly referencing concerns about potential compromises to Russia.

The comments underline a shared commitment to safeguarding territorial sovereignty and maintaining global security.
