Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that opponents of conservatism hope that Donald Trump will distance himself from Europe, but she is confident they will be disappointed. In a video message for the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Meloni said, “I know him, he is strong and effective. We will show them that they are wrong.”
She emphasized that while some may view Europe as weak, this is not the case. Meloni argued that with Trump in the White House, a disaster like the hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan would not be repeated.
“If we are not secure, we cannot feel free. And when freedom is at risk, the only thing we should do is place it in the hands of the wise. This is why conservatives are growing, and the left is angry. With Trump’s victory, this anger has turned into hysteria,” she expressed.
Meloni noted that while some were outraged by the statements of U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Munich, they did not show the same sensitivity when Europe lost its strategic autonomy. “If they had shown the same pride when Europe was tied to autocratic regimes or mass immigration, today we would have a stronger continent,” she said. Meloni also warned against the risk of a trade war, arguing that other global powers would benefit from this.
Praising the role of the United States, she stated that the Western world could not exist without the U.S. “I still believe in the Western world. For all those attacking it: we will never be ashamed of who we are. We will affirm our identity and strengthen it. The radical left wants to erase our history, but we will not let ourselves be divided,” she stressed.
Regarding Italy, Meloni said the country is heading in the right direction, with economic growth and a significant reduction in immigration. “Italy is doing very well now, our economy is growing, the flow of immigrants decreased by 60% last year, and we are increasing freedoms,” she said. The Italian Prime Minister emphasized that her government is working to strengthen Italy’s role on the international stage and maintain its historic ties with the United States.
Speaking about the war in Ukraine, Meloni praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people against Russian aggression. “A proud people is fighting for its freedom against brutal aggression. We must continue to work together for a fair and lasting peace,” she said.
According to her, peace can only be achieved through strong leadership and close cooperation among allies.
