“Greenland is ours and cannot be taken or bought”, stated the Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte Bourup Egede, today in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that he respects the right of Greenland’s inhabitants to self-determination, but that the U.S. will take the island “one way or another.”
Egede emphasized that the people of Greenland “are neither Americans nor Danes, but Greenlanders, and the U.S. should understand that.”
The future of Greenland will be decided by its people, he concluded, according to AP.
Trump had sent a message to the people of Greenland on Tuesday from the U.S. Congress: “We strongly support your right to determine your own fate, and if you choose to do so, we welcome you to the United States. We will make you safe and wealthy. Together, we will elevate Greenland to heights you never thought possible.”
Trump stated that his government is trying to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
“Greenland is needed for global security. I think we will get it. One way or another, we will get it,” Trump said.
