Ukrainian opposition leaders, Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko, have rejected the possibility of holding elections in the country during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, after media reports suggested that American officials had contacted them with this idea.
Poroshenko, former president, and Tymoshenko, former prime minister — both influential opposition figures in Ukraine — stated on March 6 that elections should only be held after peace is achieved.
In a written statement published on social media, Poroshenko acknowledged that his team had been in contact with “American partners,” but “the essence of the discussions with the American representatives has always boiled down to two principles: first, security, and peace through strength.”
“Our team has always been categorically against elections during the war,” he added.
