U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Canada has benefited from the United States for years with tariffs on lumber and dairy products, and warned that he would impose reciprocal tariffs on Canada.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that the “extraordinary” tariffs Canada imposes on dairy products and lumber have made it impossible to sell American products in Canada.

He stated that if Canada does not agree to remove them, he will impose the same tariffs on Canada.

On Thursday, Trump delayed for four weeks the new 25% tariffs on most Mexican and Canadian exports to the United States.

The day before, President Trump announced he was halting tariffs on vehicle imports from both countries after the three largest American car manufacturers said the tariffs would have a severe financial impact on them, according to VOA.

Trump delayed the tariffs on Mexico after speaking with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said her government had helped curb the flow of migrants and fentanyl, a deadly opioid in the U.S.
