A powerful storm struck the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos on Monday, causing widespread flooding and forcing authorities to close schools and halt vehicle circulation, except for emergency vehicles.
In Paros, heavy rainfall flooded the streets of the main towns, Parikia and Naousa, carrying away cars and debris. Local authorities reported that 13 people trapped by the storm were rescued by firefighters and taken to their homes. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or missing individuals.
In Mykonos, the flooding was less intense but still problematic. Excavators were used to clear pathways for the water that was flowing near cafes and seaside restaurants.
Authorities have ordered the closure of schools in Paros, Mykonos, and two other Aegean islands for Tuesday.
The Civil Protection Service has sent alarms to mobile phones, advising residents to stay indoors.
Municipal teams and private contractors are working to clear roads blocked by mudslides and to assist drivers of stranded vehicles.
Bad weather alerts for the Cyclades group of islands are expected to continue until Tuesday.
