Merz fails to secure majority for chancellor

Merz has failed to achieve the majority in the first round of voting to become the next Chancellor of Germany.

He did not reach the required number of votes, securing 310 votes out of the 316 needed.

Nine deputies were absent from the chamber, while three abstained from voting. It remains to be seen whether Merz will succeed in the next round.
