Media outlets close to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, including the pro-government “Novosti”, claim that Lithuania and Latvia have refused to allow his plane to fly through their airspace on his way to Moscow.
🔹 The alleged airspace denial is linked to the “political sensitivity of the flight’s purpose”, according to unnamed Lithuanian officials cited by Serbian sources.
Vučić is expected to visit the Russian capital for bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin on May 9, as confirmed earlier today by Yuri Ushakov, a senior advisor to the Kremlin.
This comes amid heightened international scrutiny. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has been under heavy Western sanctions, and official visits by European leaders to Russia remain highly controversial.
🔹 The planned visit could further strain Serbia’s fragile diplomatic balance between its EU aspirations and historical ties to Russia.
Neither Lithuania nor Latvia have issued an official statement yet, and Serbian government officials have not confirmed or denied the incident at the time of reporting.
