This day commemorates the historic declaration made on May 9, 1950, by the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, which marked the first step toward the creation of what is now known as the European Union. Schuman proposed the pooling of coal and steel production among European countries as a foundation for lasting peace and a future European federation.
In 1985, during the Milan Summit, EU leaders officially declared May 9 as Europe Day, which is celebrated each year with activities that promote unity and shared European values.
In Kosovo, this day is also marked with various cultural and educational events that highlight the country’s commitment to European integration.
