Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Mark Carney, during a visit to Rome for the inauguration of the new Pope. The two leaders discussed ongoing peace negotiations with Russia, international sanctions, and air defense support, according to Zelensky’s official Telegram channel as reported by Ukrainian agency UNN.

Zelensky briefed Carney on the progress of the peace talks in Istanbul, highlighting the urgency of coordinated efforts with international partners.

“I spoke about the progress of negotiations in Istanbul and the importance of continuing to align our actions. The next round of sanctions against Russia must be strong and target both energy and the shadow fleet,” said Zelensky.

He emphasized the need for enhanced air defense systems in response to recent Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Ukrainian civilians.

The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation within the “Coalition of the Willing”, a multinational alliance aimed at countering Russian aggression and streamlining international aid to Ukraine.

“I’m pleased that our defensive, economic, and international efforts are well coordinated,” Zelensky stated.

In conclusion, Zelensky expressed deep gratitude to Canada and the Canadian people for their enduring support during one of Ukraine’s most difficult times.
