Today marks 35 years since the historic adoption of the Constitutional Declaration of July 2, 1990, by the then delegates of the Assembly of Kosovo.

On this day, Kosovo declared itself a distinct political entity within the framework of the former Yugoslav federation.

The July 2 Declaration was a historic and institutional step toward the independence of Kosovo, made outside the Parliament building, under conditions of heavy police and military encirclement.

The declaration, which proclaimed Kosovo as an equal and independent unit within a Yugoslav federation or confederation, was issued in Pristina by 111 Albanian delegates of the Assembly of Kosovo.

This act marked the beginning of Kosovo’s separation from Serbia, laying the groundwork for its aspiration to be treated on an equal footing with the other Yugoslav republics.
