The European Parliament has adopted a Resolution on Albania, evaluating the country’s progress towards European Union membership for the years 2023 and 2024. This vote follows the preliminary approval of the report by the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on June 4 and a debate held during the plenary session on July 8.
Praise for Anti-Corruption Efforts and Judicial Reform
During the discussions, Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, highlighted Albania’s progress in the fight against corruption, specifically commending the work of the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) as a significant achievement.
“It is vital that Albania continues to show concrete progress in key areas,” Kos declared, emphasizing the importance of ongoing reforms. She called for judicial reform to remain unimpeded and stressed that the independence of SPAK must be protected under all circumstances.
Albanian Parliament Speaker Welcomes Resolution
The Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, also reacted to the news, describing the document as a crucial step towards EU integration. She underscored the broad support that the enlargement process enjoys within the European Parliament.
“The European Parliament adopted the Resolution on Albania,” Spiropali stated, adding that the report “constitutes an important political and institutional assessment of Albania’s progress on the path towards European Union membership and confirms the broad support that the enlargement process enjoys in the European Parliament.”
