Former Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati has strongly reacted to the racist, anti-Albanian chants heard during a basketball game in North Macedonia.

The offensive slogans, including “A good Albanian is a dead Albanian” and “Gas chambers for Albanians,” were shouted in the presence of North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski.

Bushati emphasized that these were not merely offensive remarks, but a serious threat to democratic coexistence and equality between Macedonians and Albanians — both of whom are state-building communities in North Macedonia.

“What happened during the basketball match in #Kumanovo was a clear manifestation of ethnic hatred,” Bushati wrote. “These chants do not only insult — they undermine the fragile social fabric that holds multiethnic societies together.”

He also condemned the deafening silence of high-ranking officials who witnessed the incident firsthand:

“The silence of the officials present at this ‘gallery of shame’ is unacceptable. It proves they have learned nothing from the painful events of the past.”
