U.S. President Donald Trump signaled once again that he is accelerating plans to target crime in Washington, despite data showing that crime rates in the nation’s capital are declining.
He also issued a warning to the city’s homeless population.
“The homeless must leave, IMMEDIATELY. We will provide places for you to stay, but OUT of the capital,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump’s remarks come as he has intensified his rhetoric on fighting crime in the District in recent days, following an attack on a former member of the Government Efficiency Department during a car theft attempt, foreign media report.
“Everything will happen very soon,” he added.
Last month, Trump signed an executive order easing cities’ ability to remove homeless people, sparking harsh criticism from homeless advocates.
His social media post is the latest sign that he wants to push forward this effort, especially in Washington.
However, his comments contrast with data from the Department of Justice showing that violent crime in the city in 2024 was at its lowest level in 30 years, with murders, robberies, and armed carjackings decreasing.
Trump also reiterated in his post that he plans to hold a press conference at the White House on Monday regarding crime in D.C.
