Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he expects to speak with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte by the middle of next week, adding that the two maintain regular communication over developments in Kosovo and the wider region.
Speaking during a visit to firefighters in Deliblatska Peščara, Vučić was asked about the response he expects from Brussels to a letter he sent to Rutte concerning what he described as pressure on Serbs and the reopening of the bridge over the Ibër River.
He was also asked whether the letter was intended as a clear message to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti that Serbia would not stand by while unilateral actions were taken in Prishtina.
Vučić said Serbia would do everything it could to support Serbs in Kosovo.
“I should also say that we will not stand by, and then you would publish: ‘There is Vučić preparing for war,’ or something like that. Serbia will do everything it can to help its people,” Vučić said.
Regarding his communication with Rutte, Vučić stressed that he had not announced a scheduled meeting, but only expressed his expectation that the two would speak at the beginning or by the middle of next week.
“We have regular communication, we speak regularly. I do not want to say frequently, but regularly. Of course, primarily because of the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, and in the region. So I believe that in the next two or three days I will speak with him,” Vučić said.
His comments come amid continued tensions surrounding developments in northern Kosovo and ongoing discussions between Belgrade, Prishtina and international actors over security and regional stability.
